Supported the mission-critical customer facing servers that provided wireless message flow between handheld devices and Outlook or Domino based email servers. The production environment consisted of several "clouds" of machines, each well over a hundred machines. Support work included administering Veritas Cluster Server and other High Availability systems. Functioned as team lead and manager for 9 direct reports, including teams for system administration, securtity, and internal tools. Work included very restrictive on-call duty, weekend maintenance schedules, and on-site hours. During time there, evaluated several new technologies such as blade servers, OpsWare SAS, and several other large scale administration packages. Responsible for the day to day functioning and capacity planning of the complete system and application infrastructure.

Over the space of several months, wrote a book titled "Going Mod" about the techniques used to upgrade and enhance personal computers. The book was part a discussion of techniques and part gallery of existing case mods. The work included all aspects of the book from developing the modding technqiues, to photgraphing the mods, to editing several chapters written by guest modders. The book became available around November 2004 and is well over 400 pages.

Upgraded all Sun systems to be Y2K compliant. Also worked as the primary architect for a method of moving from the existing old servers to modern equipment and software. This entailed a high degree of having to decommission or redesigning of custom legacy scripts and procedures throughout the CIT department. Redesigned NIS, printing, DNS, system monitoring, system installation procedures, some of the mail system, plus more. Did research into dynamic DNS, web proxy services, and security, and the feasibility of integration of existing UNIX mail servers and MS Exchange servers. Also provided day-to-day support of the UNIX servers (answering help desk questions, providing answers to other staff members, general UNIX support, etc.).

Designed and implemented NCI's first company network, involving multiple T1 setups, switching ethernet hubs, livingston and other vendor's routers, 100bT backbone setup, packet filtering and firewall setup, proxy servers, and the physical installation of patch panels and punch down blocks. Designed next generation of NCI company network, based on cisco routers and involving a 200 percent increase in capacity over the original network, intended to support video streaming and expansion to include ATM support. Worked on setup of ISDN links between demo sites and main NCI network. Worked on dial-in access to NCI network, including both analog and ISDN connections. Also maintained standard Network Computer demo setups, including demo support both local and around the country. Managed a group of 4 people doing MIS work, including database administration and standard PC/UNIX support. Maintained a UNIX software library mounted on over 400 machines. Activities ranged from compiling programs (X11R6, emacs19, LaTeX), installing licensed software (matlab, AVS) and administering licenses, performance monitoring, system upgrades (OS upgrades, hardware replacements, adding memory), disk management (partitioning, formatting, adding/removing drives), installing a UPS, and trouble shooting problems with individual programs (often involving source code modifications). This library existed on 4 different NFS servers around campus, each server having between 2 and 6 gigabytes of disk space. The library encompassed over 5 active architectures at a time. Duties included managing private NIS & DNS domains, as well as NFS activities. Other activities included designing and implementing an email to alphanumeric pager gateway using the ixo/tap pager protocol.

Routed ethernet cables between rooms, attached systems to the UCI backbone (both installing hardware & configuring software), trained users on various aspects of UNIX, and trouble-shot problems.
